Perhaps a child with food allergies has come into your home, center or preschool and you’re wondering if you have the knowledge and structure in place to care for this child. Maybe you already have children with food allergies in your care, but wonder if you’re caring for them correctly, or if you’ve just been lucky in avoiding an allergic reaction.

If your instincts are creating doubt, there’s a simple solution — Kristin Beltaos, of A Gift of Miles. Kristin’s consulting services arm you with the most current food allergy medical and accommodation information on how to keep food allergic children safe, happy and included.

Invite Kristin to your home care environment, center or preschool, and give her a guided tour of your facility. She can identify trouble spots, chat with you about specific needs in your environment and offer suggestions to resolve challenges, i.e., proper location of epinephrine storage, where hidden allergens can hide, evaluate curriculum and seasonal projects, etc.

She can also assist you to establish a safe environment for a food allergic child that is coming into your care: recommending protocols, writing an accommodation plan to serve as an agreement between you and your parents, helping you physically and mentally prepare for the child’s entrance into your care environment. Become a food allergy childcare expert: knowledge, creates confidence with parents and builds the reputation as a leading provider in your community that offers a food allergy friendly environment.

Kristin can also provide In-service training for your staff. View a list of courses, a current course schedule, or contact her to schedule an onsite training for your association, center or preschool.

Food Allergy Policy/Guideline Development

Caring For A Food Allergic Child Requires More Than Luck, It Calls For a Plan

As food allergy continues to grow nationally, schools and early care and education programs attempt to provide safety and inclusion. Approximately 6 million children in the United States have a food allergy which equates to 1 in 13, or roughly 2 in every classroom. Here in the state of Minnesota, 60,000 students have a food allergy, and that number is considered conservative.

With these statistics, school and early care and education programs need to develop policies to manage food allergies, establish preventative measures to avoid exposure, plans for preventing an allergic reaction and responding to a food allergy emergency.

Think of the last time something happened that created confidence with you. Perhaps the mechanic’s explanation of your last car repair was so thorough that you actually understood the issue and confidently knew that it was a necessary service. Maybe you haven’t felt well lately and your physician relayed test results to you that ruled out a serious health condition, you felt confident that everything was going to be okay.

Parents who have a child with a food allergy appreciate a confident caregiver who understands the food allergy world and has a plan to manage exposure, anaphylaxis and inclusiveness within the care environment. There are a couple of ways to create this confidence: 1) Being an educated caregiver and 2) Having a policy/guideline in place to address food allergies in your environment.

Being educated about food allergies can be achieved, by taking one of Kristin Beltaos’ scheduled classroom or online courses. Another option is to determine the course of interest for your association, center or preschool and schedule an onsite training for your group. If you are taking a course for In-service hours, don’t forget to check with your licensor for approval.

A key step is to establish a food allergy policy or guideline for your environment. While this may sound like a daunting task, Kristin is here to assist you using evidence-based, best practices to proactively manage food allergies. Caring for a child with a food allergy is much more than luck, it is being prepared, having a plan and a sequence of action items to achieve avoidance of the allergen as well as the protocols in place in the event of an anaphylactic reaction.

Build Your Reputation As a Leading Provider That Offers a Food Allergy Friendly Environment

Caring for children and keeping them safe is a top priority for you. That’s why continuing education is such an important aspect of your career. The more you know, the more highly valued you are and that is even more critical when you deal with children who have life threatening food allergies. Ask yourself a couple of quick questions: What is the difference between an allergy and an intolerance? What is anaphylaxis? Where can allergens sneakily hide? What is epinephrine? Why must children with food allergies have two epinephrine auto-injectors?

“Thank you Kristin for offering this food allergy class through Eager to Learn. It was a very informative online class. I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to be able to call you when I needed your support. Your information packet, message board, and chat classes were very informative. It’s been a pleasure having you as my teacher!” – Jackie S., Care Center Employee, Rollingstone, MN
